Matthew Hindson

Concerto for Violin- Australian Postcards Violin with Piano Book

Genre: Contemporary/Classical

Matthew Hindson's Violin Concerto (Australian Postcards) consists of three movements that reflect contemporary Australian culture. The work was commissioned by Ars Musica Australis with the goal of capturing the “Spirit in Australia” through modern Australian themes, similar to other Australian concertos like Ross Edwards' Maninyas and Peter Sculthorpe’s Irkanda IV.

  1. Wind Turbine at Kooragang Island: The first movement is inspired by the wind turbine at Kooragang Island near Newcastle. It evokes the immense power and speed of the turbine, with fast, energetic violin passages symbolising the turbine's relentless motion. The movement also incorporates a metaphorical relationship to the turbine's three prongs.

  2. Westerway: The second movement reflects Hindson's visit to the town of Westerway in Tasmania. It portrays the contrast between the idyllic nature of rural life and the struggles faced by small communities experiencing economic decline, particularly after the closure of the logging industry. The movement carries a reflective tone, balancing nostalgia with hope for future growth through innovation.

  3. Grand Final Day: The final movement captures the excitement and celebration surrounding Australia's Grand Final Day, a day filled with high emotion, sporting drama, and widespread celebrations. It reflects the national passion for sports, with a dynamic and triumphant conclusion to the concerto.

The concerto, approximately 26 minutes long, was partly composed during Hindson’s residency at the Peggy Glanville-Hicks House in Paddington. 88 pages.
