Johann Sebastian Bach - The Art Of Fugue BWV 1080 Piano Book

Urtext Edition without fingering, Clothbound

A superb clothbound Henle Urtext edition of Bach’s monumental Art of Fugue – an authoritative, beautifully presented score for serious study and performance.

One of the great achievements of contrapuntal writing, Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080 receives a suitably distinguished presentation in this premium clothbound Henle Urtext edition.

Left unfinished at Bach’s death, The Art of Fugue explores the extraordinary possibilities of a single principal theme through an increasingly sophisticated series of fugues and canons. In the manuscript, Bach’s son Carl Philipp Emanuel famously marked the point at which the final fugue breaks off – shortly after Bach introduces the notes corresponding to his own name, B-A-C-H, into the work.

Edited by renowned Bach scholar Davitt Moroney, this edition also presents Moroney’s completion of the unfinished final fugue with 30 supplementary measures.

Although Bach left no indication of instrumentation and wrote the individual parts in open score, the complete cycle lends itself remarkably well to harpsichord or piano performance, while remaining one of the most important works for the study of fugue and counterpoint.

Produced to Henle’s exacting editorial and engraving standards, this Urtext edition without fingering is presented in a handsome clothbound format – an exceptional reference, performance edition and addition to the library of the serious Bach scholar, pianist or harpsichordist. 137 pages.

Contents Includes:

  • The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080
  • Contrapunctus I–XIV, BWV 1080
  • Canons in Hypodiapason, alla Decima, alla Duodecima, in Hypodiatessaron, BWV 1080
  • Appendix: Contrapunctus XIII – Version for Two Harpsichords, BWV 1080

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a German composer, organist and keyboard virtuoso whose music represents one of the great achievements of the Baroque era. A master of counterpoint, harmony and musical form, Bach composed an extraordinary body of sacred and secular music, including cantatas, concertos, keyboard works and chamber music. His best-known works include the Brandenburg Concertos, The Well-Tempered Clavier, Goldberg Variations, St Matthew Passion and The Art of Fugue. His influence on Western music has been immense, and his works remain central to classical study, performance and repertoire today.
