Johann Nepomuk Hummel Trumpet Concerto in E Flat Major 📚

Trumpet Solo & Piano Accompaniment Book

Transposed to Eb for Trumpet in Bb - Original Key: E Major

Johann Nepomuk Hummel was a pivotal figure in the classical music scene of his time, studying under the greats like Mozart, Albrechtsberger, Salieri, and Haydn. His stylistic evolution as a composer bridged the gap between the classical and emerging romantic periods, blending Mozartian elegance with the increased virtuosity characteristic of the romantic era.

The Trumpet Concerto in E Flat Major was composed in 1803, during the earlier stages of Hummel's career. Reflecting the classical traditions he was trained in, this three-movement concerto is constructed with a formal layout, and it adheres to classical melodic and harmonic idioms. This edition, arranged for trumpet and piano by Martin Focke and edited by Joachim Pliquett for the solo trumpet part, makes the piece accessible for performers using a B-flat trumpet.

In this edition, the work has been transposed down a half-step from its original key of E major to accommodate B-flat trumpet players, making it easier to perform while retaining the integrity of the original composition. The book contains 48 pages, including a separate insert for the solo trumpet part.

      Who Was Johann Nepomuk Hummel?

Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was an Austrian composer, conductor, and virtuoso pianist whose work spanned the transition from the Classical to the Romantic era. Born in Pressburg (now Bratislava, Slovakia), Hummel showed early signs of musical talent and was mentored by several significant musicians of his time, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, and Antonio Salieri.

Hummel gained considerable fame as a pianist and was renowned for his technical skill, eventually becoming one of the most prominent pianists in Europe. His compositions include works for piano, orchestra, voice, chamber ensembles, and even operas. However, his music for the piano, including his sonatas, concertos, and studies, has been particularly important for the instrument's repertoire and has served as a link between the classical style of Mozart and the more romantic style of composers like Frédéric Chopin.

One of his most famous works is the Trumpet Concerto in E Major (which is often transposed to E-flat Major to accommodate the B-flat trumpet). This piece is a staple in the trumpet repertoire and is frequently performed today. Hummel's style generally reflects the classical forms and aesthetic, but as he grew older, he incorporated more elements of the Romantic period into his work, including richer harmonies and more virtuosic demands on performers.

Beyond his work as a composer and performer, Hummel was also an important educator and wrote a piano method that was widely used in the 19th century. His influence on the musical world of his time and beyond is significant, and his works continue to be performed and studied to this day.
