Prince - Introducing NPG - Double Vinyl Set
The Complete Rio de Janeiro Performance from 1991
Prince, an unparalleled force in the music industry, will forever be remembered as an artist who defied categorisation and redefined talent.
From his 1978 debut album For You—where he played every instrument—to his untimely and tragic passing in April 2016, Prince Rogers Nelson left an indelible mark with his extraordinary musicianship, compositional brilliance, and performances that set him apart from any other pop artist in modern history.
With 39 studio albums and over 100 million copies sold, Prince's accolades include seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Yet, despite the recognition, Prince remained a fiercely independent artist, confident in his own vision, always knowing what was truly worth pursuing.
The early '90s were marked by one of many stylistic evolutions in Prince’s career. After parting ways with his iconic backing band, The Revolution, in 1986, he formed a new group, The New Power Generation.
Featuring talents such as Rosie Gaines on keyboards and vocals, Michael B. on drums, Sonny T. on bass, Levi Seacer Jr. on guitar, Tommy Barbarella on keyboards, and the Game Boyz—a trio of vocalists, dancers, and percussionists—the band released the double Platinum album Diamonds And Pearls in October 1991.
That same year, Prince and his band played two dates at Rock in Rio 2, the second edition of the legendary Brazilian music festival. This performance, captured on January 18th, 1991, is widely regarded as one of the finest shows in musical history. With the crowd completely enthralled, Prince delivered an electrifying performance featuring classics such as "Purple Rain," "Kiss," "Nothing Compares 2 U," and a medley of "Baby I’m A Star." Notably, he generously allowed his co-vocalist Rosie Gaines to take lead vocals on a couple of Aretha Franklin covers, showcasing his humility and confidence.
Now, presented across two LPs in the highest available quality, this performance stands as a powerful reminder of Prince’s immense talent and the tremendous loss the world experienced.
