 Who was Mathilde Marchesi?

Mathilde Marchesi was a renowned 19th-century vocal teacher and soprano of Belgian descent. She was born on March 24, 1821, in Frankfurt, Germany, and became one of the most influential voice teachers of her time. Marchesi studied singing in Italy and Paris and achieved success as an opera singer, particularly in the bel canto style.

She later transitioned into teaching and became a prominent voice teacher in Paris, where she trained numerous renowned singers, including Nellie Melba, Emma Calvé, and Marcella Sembrich, among others. Marchesi's teaching methods and vocal exercises contributed significantly to the development of vocal pedagogy during her era.

Mathilde Marchesi's legacy endures through her students' successful careers and her vocal exercises and instructional materials, which are still used by vocal instructors and singers today. She passed away on November 17, 1913, leaving a lasting impact on the world of classical singing.
