"If I Open The Door" is a choral composition that emerged from a unique and inspirational experience. It features settings for both SSA (Soprano/Alto) and SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) voicings, accompanied by piano. This piece was born when the composer, while waiting for an interview for a position as choir conductor and singing teacher at Cannon Hill Anglican College in Brisbane, came across a student's poem in the school's Year Book. Struck by the poignant words that resonated with the struggles many face, the composer was inspired to set these words to music after a creative weekend of composing.

The resulting composition, "If I Open The Door," spans 12 pages of sheet music. It beautifully conveys the emotional depth and universal experiences articulated in the poem. The music was composed right after the composer was hired, marking a serendipitous start to their tenure at the school.

The composer later connected with Rachael, the Year 10 student who wrote the original poem and a member of the music program, bringing a wonderful sense of completion and destiny to the project. This piece not only highlights the talent and emotional insight of the young poet but also showcases the creative synergy between poetry and music.
