John Field - Nocturnes Complete For Piano Solo Book 📚
Step into a World of Dreamy Melodies with John Field's Complete Nocturnes for Piano Solo
Edited by Louis Koehler and published by the reputable Edition Peters, this 76-page book offers a comprehensive collection of all 18 Nocturnes by John Field, the composer often credited with pioneering the Nocturne genre. First published in 1812, Field's Nocturnes have captivated audiences for centuries with their emotive, atmospheric compositions.
Mood Over Form
Unlike traditional compositions that follow a particular form or thematic development, Field's Nocturnes are unique in their approach to emotional expression. They do not adhere to a set structure, but rather aim to evoke a specific mood—often one of "consoled sadness." These pieces are designed to connect directly with the listener's emotional state, creating an intimate, evocative musical experience.
A Legacy of Influence
It was the emotional depth of these pieces that inspired later composers, most notably Frederic Chopin. Chopin took the Nocturne genre to new heights, further developing its expressive potential while retaining the signature qualities of tenderness and dreaminess initiated by Field.

Who Was John Field?
John Field was an Irish pianist and composer born in 1782 in Dublin. He is best known for being a pioneer of the nocturne, a musical composition that is inspired by, or evocative of, the night. His work had a significant influence on later composers, most notably Frédéric Chopin, who adopted and further developed the nocturne form.
Field initially gained recognition as a gifted pianist, studying under Muzio Clementi in London, before settling in Russia. His piano music is characterised by a lyrical, poetic quality, often using simple, song-like melodies over rich harmonies. His contributions to piano literature and performance make him a notable figure in the transition from the Classical to the Romantic era of music history. He died in Moscow in 1837.
