Edition Peters

Franz Lizst - Trois Études de concert (Piano 2 Hands) Instrumental Solo Book 📚

Genre: Classical

The "Franz Liszt - Trois Études de concert (Piano 2 Hands) Instrumental Solo Book," published by Edition Peters, offers an Urtext edition of these essential pieces in the classical piano repertoire. Composed during Liszt's tenure as a conductor in Weimar, the "Trois Études de concert" were originally released in three separate books in 1849. This edition is especially valuable because it is based on a recently discovered original manuscript located in the Bibliothèque musicale François-Lang in Royaumont, north of Paris. This manuscript reveals numerous details that have been overlooked or inaccurately represented in previous editions.

Careful attention has been given to ensure that this new Urtext edition presents the most accurate representation of Liszt's original composition. It also draws inspiration from the German and French first editions of 1849, providing comprehensive insight into the work. Unique to this edition are Liszt's short cadenzas for the Etude No. 3 and an alternative version of the Coda. These inclusions offer intriguing options for performance practice today.

Comprising 48 pages, this edition is a significant contribution to Liszt scholarship and provides pianists with a reliable, scholarly source for mastering these challenging and expressive études.

    Who Was Franz Lizst?

Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, and teacher. He was one of the most prominent and influential musicians of the 19th century, renowned especially for his skill as a pianist. Liszt's virtuosity and showmanship at the keyboard set new standards for piano performance, and he was one of the most sought-after performers of his time. He is credited with many innovations in piano technique and performance style.

In terms of composition, Liszt made significant contributions to a variety of musical genres, but he is perhaps best known for his piano works, which include concertos, études, and solo pieces like the "Hungarian Rhapsodies," "Années de pèlerinage," and "Transcendental Études." He was a pioneer in the development of the symphonic poem, a form of orchestral music intended to evoke a non-musical idea, like a poem, painting, or scene.

Liszt was also a generous mentor and benefactor to other composers, including Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, and Edvard Grieg, among others. His teaching and writings on music helped to disseminate the works of other composers and contributed to the advancement of music theory and criticism.

Known for his charisma and flamboyant lifestyle, Liszt became a celebrity in his lifetime, attracting a fan following that could be likened to modern-day "Lisztomania." Yet, he also had a deeply spiritual side and took minor orders in the Catholic Church later in life, earning him the title "Abbé Liszt."

In summary, Franz Liszt was a multifaceted musician who left an indelible mark on the history of music through his compositions, performances, and contributions to musical thought.
