Dreamlike, colourful and technically brilliant – one of Debussy’s most treasured works and an enduring masterpiece of the clarinet repertoire.
Claude Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Piano is one of the great works of the clarinet repertoire, combining the composer's unmistakable Impressionist colour with lyrical beauty, changing moods and considerable technical demands.
Commissioned in 1909 by Gabriel Fauré, then director of the Paris Conservatoire, the work was originally written as a competition piece and dedicated to clarinettist Prosper Mimart. Mimart later gave its public premiere on 16 January 1911 at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. Debussy subsequently orchestrated the work, expanding its already remarkable palette of musical colours.
Debussy himself held the composition in particularly high regard, writing to his publisher Durand that “this piece is, without a doubt, one of the sweetest I have ever written.”
True to its title, the Rhapsodie unfolds with a wonderfully free and poetic character. Its opening, marked Reveusement lent (dreamily slow), creates an atmospheric sense of dawn before the music gradually awakens and transforms. Calm, lyrical passages give way to playful, mischievous and joyous moments, allowing the player to explore an extraordinary range of colour and expression.
Alongside its musical beauty comes a significant technical challenge. Debussy calls for speed, precision, control and tonal flexibility, making Première Rhapsodie both a demanding study and a rewarding performance work for the accomplished player.
Claude Debussy (1862–1918) was a French composer and one of the most influential musical figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Closely associated with musical Impressionism, Debussy developed a distinctive style characterised by rich harmonic colour, atmosphere, fluid rhythm and expressive use of instrumental tone. His works include Clair de lune, La Mer, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and Première Rhapsodie. His innovative approach to harmony and orchestration had a lasting influence on classical music and generations of composers who followed.

Express Shipping is a fully tracked priority Express Service offered through Australia Post and Team Global Express. A tracking number will be provided once your order has been shipped. Please allow approximately 1–2 business days for metro areas and additional time for regional and remote destinations, including some areas of WA, NT and North QLD.
Standard Shipping is a fully tracked service offered through Australia Post. Tracking information will be provided once your order has been shipped. Please allow 2–6 business days for delivery of your order. NT and WA customers should allow approximately 6–8 business days.
Courier Shipping is available to most areas across Australia, with deliveries handled by CouriersPlease, Aramex, Team Global Express or another suitable courier partner, depending on your location. Please allow approximately 2–8 business days for delivery. Tracking information will be emailed to you once your order has been dispatched.
Economy Shipping (Untracked) is our low-cost economy option, sent via Australia Post using postage stamps — good old-fashioned snail mail. This service does not include tracking. You'll receive an email confirmation once your order has been dispatched from our warehouse, but no tracking number or delivery updates will be available.
Please allow approximately 5–12 business days for delivery. We do not recommend untracked shipping for time-sensitive orders; please select a tracked or Express service if you need your order by a particular date. Music2u will not replace missing items under the untracked Economy Shipping option.
Customer Pickup (South East Melbourne)
Customer pickup is available from our Dingley Village, Melbourne VIC 3172 location. Pickup orders are generally processed within 24 hours, Monday–Friday. Once your order is ready, you'll receive an email and text message with your unique parcel locker code. Your order can then be collected from the Music2u Parcel Box 24/7, at a time that suits you. Please wait until you receive your ‘Order Ready’ text/email before arriving to collect your order. Your order will not be available for collection before this notification has been sent.
If an item is unavailable or requires additional time to arrive, we'll contact you by phone or email. If you require an urgent pickup, please contact us before ordering so we can confirm the stock is available onsite.

If you select Economy Shipping (Postage Stamps), you'll receive an email confirming when your order has been dispatched from our warehouse. As this is an untracked service, no tracking number or delivery updates are available.
Pre-Orders
If your order contains both in-stock and pre-order items, the in-stock items will be dispatched using the shipping method selected at checkout.
When a single pre-order book becomes available, it will generally be sent separately via untracked Australia Post at no additional shipping charge.
If you would prefer your pre-order to be sent via tracked or Express shipping, please contact us and we can arrange this for you. Additional shipping charges may apply.
If multiple pre-order items become available around the same time, we may combine them into one shipment where practical.
