Ludwig Van Beethoven

(Moonlight) Sonata Op 27 No 2 C Sharp Min No 14 Urtext Book 📚

Intermediate - Advanced

Step into the ethereal world of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, more commonly known as the "Moonlight Sonata," with this Urtext edition. Designed for intermediate to advanced pianists, this edition brings you closer to the composer's original vision, marked "Quasi una fantasia," Op. 27, No. 2. Beethoven completed this iconic piece in 1801 and dedicated it in 1802 to his pupil, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi.

Although Beethoven himself titled it as a "sonata almost a fantasy," the name "Moonlight Sonata" was embraced during his lifetime, thanks to evocative descriptions by critics like Ludwig Rellstab and Wilhelm von Lenz. Their words paint a hauntingly beautiful scene, likening the first movement to a placid lake illuminated by moonlight, and the overall composition to a solitary grave on a barren plain under the soft glow of a crescent moon.

This edition, enriched by the latest research, suggests that Beethoven's inspiration might have been the ethereal sounds of the Aeolian harp. Insightful introductory texts by Murray Perahia and Norbert Gertsch delve into this historical context, and Perahia's fingerings are included to guide your technical execution.

Comprising 28 pages, this book not only offers a pathway into one of classical music's most beloved compositions but also serves as an insightful guide into its historical and theoretical underpinnings. It's an indispensable resource for those who wish to fully grasp the depth and nuance of this masterpiece.

Who Was Ludwig van Beethoven?

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) was a German composer and pianist who is one of the most influential figures in the history of Western classical music. Known for his innovative compositions in forms like symphonies, sonatas, and quartets, Beethoven's work laid the foundation for the Romantic era in music. His career is often divided into three periods: Early, Middle ("Heroic"), and Late, each marked by distinct stylistic evolutions. Despite losing his hearing in later life, Beethoven continued to compose groundbreaking works, including his Ninth Symphony and late string quartets. His music is celebrated for its emotional depth and technical complexity.

No composer has had as profound and sustained an influence on immediately following generations to the present day as Beethoven. His instrumental music, especially his symphonies, served as touchstones for symphonic composition throughout the nineteenth century. The extraordinarily high standard of his music and his relative independence as a freelance composer have led to his being characterised as the greatest composer of all time.
