The highly emotional work is also his first major chamber music composition. The public premiere in December 1855 was unfortunately not a great success, and so began a lengthy revision, before the trio reached its present form in the late 1850s. Smetana happily performed it all his life, but he was not to find a publisher until 1880, when one of his students unceremoniously invited the Hamburg publisher Hugo Pohle to perform the trio.
